Colombia has five natural regions to explore, each one with different terrain, flora and fauna.
The Caribbean Region has beautiful beaches and very special dry forests at La Guajira Peninsula. An independent mountain massif up rises from the ocean floor forming the Santa Marta Mountains.
The Western Andes drops into the Pacific Ocean forming a narrow but long strip of land covered by dense jungle. This is the Chocó Region that runs from northern Ecuador into Panamá and the Darién region.
The Andean Region is marked by ever-present mountains in 3 ranges – the Eastern, Central and Western Andes, with the Cauca and Magdalena Valleys in between, plus the largest cities: Bogotá, Medellín and Cali.
The Eastern Andes drops into the wide lowlands or “llanos” of the Orinoco Region in the northern half of the country, covered by savannas and gallery forests along rivers that slide into the Orinoco river.
The Eastern Andes drops into the lowlands of the Amazon Region in the southern half of the country. The Amazon region is covered by dense jungles in very humid terrain.
