A locally distributed endemic of mid Magdalena Valley, present in humid forests, edges and second growth forests between 250-1500m.
A split from Golden-naped Woodpecker (Melanerpes chrysauchen) from Costa Rica and Panama.
Females lack the male’s white forecrown (replaced by black) and red belly.
